背景 Arginase is the central enzyme of the hepatic urea cycle and comprises the principal route for the disposal of excess nitrogen resulting from amino acid and nucleotide metabolism. It is also expressed in extrahepatic tissues, including blood vessels, and that it competes with NOS for the substrate L-arginine. In human beings and mammals, there are two isoforms of arginases, arginase-1 (Arg-I) and arginase-II (Arg-II). Aginase I is a cytosolic enzyme that is abundantly expressed in the liver and constitutes the majority of total body arginase activity, involving in ammonia detoxification. In contrast, arginase II is a mitochondrial protein that has a wide tissue distribution being most highly expressed in the kidney and prostate and poorly expressed in the liver. Due to its generation of L-ornithine, arginase is involved in several important downstream metabolic pathways. Arginase has emerged as a key player in the mammalian immune system and the enzyme is involved in various aspects of inflammation.
